1. After reading chapter five, what did you understand about the impact of using time-outs with children? What are some alternatives? When would you use a time-out?
Time-out is well-known and very common method that used in an attempt to stop or discipline the child. Traditionally it is considered as the very reasonable and efficiently method for preschooler, but in real practice it doesn’t work for all situations, and certainly, is not suitable for every child. Leader teaches children to learn from their mistakes, the educator does not just stop the wrong behavior of the child, he helps the child to understand the reasons causing this behavior, and proposes to use the methods of solving problems. This style of teaching cares not only about the final result of teaching, it is taking care of the individual understanding and needs, and mastering essential life skills of the child and child’s emotions. The goal is the healthy child's development and building of relationships of knowledge and responsiveness to the perspectives of others (other kids and adults.) The teacher can and should actively model and teach democratic life skills throughout every day. They expect children to learn them, and guide them IN THE PROCESS. A commitment to guidance includes viewing curriculum as something that is a part of children’s life. Professional teachers use guidance to ensure that no child is stigmatized and denied full membership in the classroom community and so that all children progress in the use and learning of democratic life skills.
