The Generations Of Times Square

Broadway, Ball Drops, and Diners are all of the main signs of Times Square. This city of America has been the town of lights for many years. Many come to see this town of brilliance every year; whether it’s for the shows, the food, or the lights, Times Square is near impossible to resist. Being established in the early 1800s, the city has a lot keeping it up. This is Times Square, a city alive in spirit that has been an American landmark for generations, and many more to come. Inside of this bright landmark, many events take place. These three biggest are obviously The Ball Drop, Taste Of Times Square, and Times Square Arts. In this time, a large, lighted ball falls from a long pole to mark the end of a year. “The first Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration was held in 1903 when a New York Times newspaper office decided to celebrate the company’s opening in Times Square.” (http://www.uscitytraveler.com/20-things-you-didnt-know-about-times-square/) The ball marking time was not always just for New Years. The very first dropping was in England, the year of 1889. With this ball they used it to mark the time for the sailors. The very first ball of Times Square, was an iron sphere weighing 700 pounds. This was the first of the seven that floated along the top of the city. The current ball that has been with us since 2007, was made by the famous glassworks company Waterford Crystal. This ball is made with many minerals and thousands of LED lights. With this 11,000 pound ball and its 2,688 panels of 32,256 lights, The Ball Drop is a world famous event, creating New York. The Ball Drop is not the only thing happening here. An event called Taste Of Times Square takes place every year as well. In this competition, forty chefs from around the world come in and cook their best meals hoping to win first place. Being the center of diners, many chefs of Times Square compete. Many of these restaurants are known to you such as Applebees, The Shake Shack, and Carmines. Along with this food festival is music. Performance is a large thing in Times Square, and is a part of this competition. Although, the musical artists do not compete, they simply present shows and perform their
