The fourth and final art visit was one of the more interesting ones; we were told to go see “Chance” by Kathy McTavish. The show was an interesting experience to say the least and is worth the time to go see. McTavish was able to captivate the vision and hearing senses with abstract designs everywhere and strange noises constantly being heard. Her usage of the computer monitors to display her many designs is something that not many people would think of as a medium. Another unique aspect of the show was how she was able to make the large room feel like it was filled; there was always some type of design on the wall wherever you looked. Kathy uses the sounds and the large room to create an echo effect that can be felt throughout the show. Her concept of using code as the main point in the show perfectly describes the modern world; our lives seem to be driven by technology and the devices we use. Almost everything we do involves using some type of technology, and at the center of technology is coding. In her show, McTavish describes code in many different forms, such as a literature, pattern language, a spell, and many other things. This is true. Code seems like such a magical thing to anybody that may not be …show more content…
At first look, the show seems like a bunch of random shapes being displayed on monitors with simple lines painted on the surrounding walls. This bold contrast between the complexity of the coding displayed and the simplicity of the wall designs is what Kathy wants the viewer to notice. This contrast could also symbolize the growth of art. Art originally began as simple cave paintings and has transformed to become centered around technology. Another comparison that can be made is between humans and machines. Machines are detail-orientated and precise, as depicted from the coding displayed. Humans, on the other hand, are messy and abstract, which is depicted by the designs painted on the
