Driving around in hostile lands in the turret of a Humvee with an M240 Machine gun, ready to unload 1000 rounds per minute on terrorist forces must change a person. This was reality for Senior Airman Timothy Miller for around a year, between 2009 and 2010. Growing up in a nearby small town, not too unlike Wakarusa, Miller is the product of many confusing and haphazard circumstances in his early life, and a resolute drive to succeed in recent times. Miller graduated in 2004 and forewent collegiate education on advice of his adopted family because of the tradition within that family to continue in factory work. At first, the jobs were nice, Miller recalls bringing home over $2,000 per week in his early twenties, but he was as affected as anyone during the decline of the RV industry. After basic training in Texas and being trained in a variety of firearms including the M9 pistol, the M16 assault rifle, the M203 grenade launcher, and the M240 machine gun, Miller returned home and was told that he would be based at Grissom Air Force Base. While he was called on intermittently to brush up on his training, he was not deployed overseas (to Iraq) until 2009. In the meantime, Miller became an employee of the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, taking a job at the Elkhart County jail. While basic training opened his eyes to some weapons training, he was yet to see the reality of the Middle East. His first eye opening experience in the service of the principles of law and order came within the jail.
