After basic training in Texas and being trained in a variety of firearms including the M9 pistol, the M16 assault rifle, the M203 grenade launcher, and the M240 machine gun, Miller returned home and was told that he would be based at Grissom Air Force Base. While he was called on intermittently to brush up on his training, he was not deployed overseas (to Iraq) until 2009. In the meantime, Miller became an employee of the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, taking a job at the Elkhart County jail. While basic training opened his eyes to some weapons training, he was yet to see the reality of the Middle East. His first eye opening experience in the service of the principles of law and order came within the jail.
