ESL 099 Writing It’s pretty hard for me to tell exactly what I have learned in 099 this quarter, but I surely know about one thing is that I will get many difficulties in 101 or higher level classes without starting from this class. Learning from this class is like a tree is building its roots to prepare growing up strongly. In my opinion, using correct grammar, knowing what types of essay you are writing, and using advanced level vocabulary are the most essential things that I need to become an academic writer. This is my first year in college which is a different world of learning. Back in the day when I was still in high school, using correct grammar was what I never noticed when writing an essay. I just wrote in the way I thought it would be understandable for the readers. I had no idea how to use past tense and present tense in the sentences at the same time, and I usually created lots of run-on sentences in my essays. As a result, grammar was not my strong point before coming to this class. By improving and collecting many helpful tips from my instructor and my friends, I now feel confident in using correct grammar for my essays. I also have realized some ways that could help to get good grade in the essays are I need to review my work by checking some basic grammar such as subjects and verbs, verb- tense, and correct punctuation before handing to my instructor. The more I write, the more my writing skills and my grammar improve. There are so many types of essay that I have learned in this class such as the researched essay, comparison- contrast essays, and cause-and- effect essays. Organizing what type of essay before starting to write is very important because you might be not on the right track if you are confused to choose the correct type of essay. Reading the question carefully is one way to solve this problem. In high school, I never putted the background information, the hook, and thesis statement in the introduction. Moreover, I did not even quote the sources that I took from other authors; that could be illegal.
