Tlingit Native American Tribe The Tlingit Native American Tribe once controlled land over 500 miles long. The Tlingit tribe lived along the coast of southeastern Alaska. The Tlingit communities divided into 15 territories called kwans. Major Tlingit tribes included Sitka, Auk, Chilkat, and many others. (“Tlingit” UXL) The Tlingit tribe is a big group with over 15,000 Tlingit Native Americans and Haida people. (Grumet) The Tlingit carved totem poles in shapes of animals and humans. The Tlingit people controlled trade, but then started to trade with Russia. Everything was good until Russian’s wanted to settle and control trade. Tlingit rejected it and in 1802 Chief Katlian led a war against Russian the Tlingit killed many Russians. Russian recaptured the land but the US bought Alaska in 1867. (“Tlingit” UXL) They fished, hunted deer, seals ,and gathered berries, bird eggs, and shellfish. For winter they dried their food. Their Diet centered on foods found near rivers and sea. Bears provided food and fur for robes. Only poor families ate porpoise it gives bad body odor. They cooked in watertight boxes or baskets by dropping hot rocks. Fry-bread is used for everyday meals and for special occasions, and certain fish oils are still considered a luxury. (Grumet) Elaine Abraham is the first Tlingit to enter the nursing profession. Some of her accomplishments included co-founding the Alaska Native language center, teaching the Tlingit language at a community college and much more. Tlingit activist Elizabeth Peratrovich demand for justice and equality for Alaska Natives. The state saw her effort as a civil right leader and in 1988 come up with “The Annual Elizabeth Peratrovich
