MLK once said, “We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.” As he preached his famous “I Have a Dream Speech”, MLK manifested the perseverance of every single African American during that time. We all want to strive for equal rights and fair treatment for all. Fair treatment and equal rights are something people feel should be guaranteed in the courtroom. Yet as we observe in To Kill a Mockingbird and Just Mercy, these rights and treatment that should be guaranteed, at the very least, are nowhere to be found in their respective courtrooms. When we look at Just Mercy, we follow the life of Stevenson as he goes through the justice system showing mercy to those condemned and those who had unfair trials. Throughout the book we see him showing the same perseverance as MLK, trying to fight for the rights of those who are mistreated and looked down on. As we look at and compare both of the justice systems shown in Just Mercy and To Kill a Mockingbird, they draw many similarities. Although both justice systems in Just Mercy and To Kill a Mockingbird are from different periods, they are portrayed in similar ways that need systematic change due to their abuse of power, yet some people still choose to help fight for the underprivileged like Atticus and Stevenson. Both Just Mercy and To Kill a Mockingbird frequently depict the justice system as abusing its power in order to get the outcome they please. Even though the justice system is given the highest power in the United States, being able to convict the President may be viewed as the most powerful person in the government. The justice system still never fails to show its failures that seem to seep through its cracks like sap from a
