Atticus teaches his children to value education and learning by being a role model. For example, a time where Atticus demonstrates the importance of education and learning to his children is when Scout goes to school and is reading fluently, which is quite surprising to Miss Caroline, her teacher, because Scout is so young. However, instead of being pleased, Miss Caroline tells Scout to stop reading outside of school because she is introducing a new teaching method in which children have to start reading afresh. Scout is not amused when she hears this because she loves reading so much. She talks to Atticus and says that she would no longer like to go to school. Atticus is so dedicated to education and puts lots of emphasis and importance on learning. His thoughts are very much justified because education is so important especially in the society they live in. without a good education, it is hard to survive. Without a good education, one would have to become a farmer or something else that did not require many qualifications from school Education and learning from school play an important role in the Finch’s lives for this reason. Furthermore, Atticus has shown the emphasis he puts on learning, by supporting his brother’s education. Putting his own needs and wants aside, Atticus goes on and puts his money to better things. For several years “he invested his earnings in his brother’s education” (Lee 5). Atticus not only cares about his own education but he cares even more about others education. This is something that makes him an excellent role model. It has already been shown how much he cares about Scout and Jem’s education but just the fact that he put his salary, which came from his own hard work toward his brother’s education, shows how highly he thinks of
