“In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins.” In this paper the Marxist lens will be used to show the social class of these pieces of literature and film. At Animal Farm, the pigs think that they are better than the rest of the farm animals and use their smarts to their advantage. Inside To Kill A Mockingbird, there is a major discrepancy between the families, specifically between the poor and rich families. In Zootopia, the predators and the prey each think that they are higher than one another. Hence, the Marxist lens can be seen through many different pieces of literature. Also through this quote, “Mr. Ewell was endearing himself to his fellow citizens. The whispers and chuckles below us probably had to do with what a card he was” (Lee). It is shown that everybody else looks down on the Ewell’s. They call him a “card” meaning that he is clownish or a laughable character. Animal Farm also uses the Marxism/Marxist lens a fair bit and this quote, “The mystery of where the milk went to” was soon cleared up. It was mixed everyday into the pigs’ mash” (Orwell). Shows that the pigs believe that they are in a higher social class than everyone else. As a result, they have given themselves extra supplies because they are “better” than all the other animals. They believe that their brains are more important and that all of the other animals are not as important as them. The quote, “The early apples were now ripening, and the grass of the orchard was littered with windfalls. The animals had assumed as a matter of course that these would be shared out equally; one day, however, the order went forth that all the windfalls were to be collected and brought to the harness-room for the use of the pigs” (Orwell).
