According to the book, Cecil Jacob says “My folks said your daddy was a disgrace an' that nigger oughta hang from the water tank” (Lee 102). Another quote comes from Mrs. Dubose saying “Not only Finch waiting on tables but one in the courthouse lawing for *******!” Jem stiffened. Mrs. Dubose’s shot had gone and she knew it: “Yes indeed, what has the world come to when a Finch goes against his raisings? I’ll tell you!” She put her hand to her mouth. When she drew it away, it trailed a long silver thread of saliva. “Your fathers no better than the ******* and trash he works for!” (Lee 135). Nevertheless, the two quotes are very racist and point directly to Atticus about defending Tom Robinson. Everyone from small children to elderly women are discriminating Atticus about what he believe. This will wear down Atticus about having hope to win the case.
In conclusion, the main idea of the book, To kill a mockingbird is that racial injustice is the main problem. One can see this with Atticus being judged for defending a black man. Tom Robinson, a black man, being accused of a crime he did not commit. And, offensive comments about Boo Radley being some type of monster that will try to avenge against black people. This three examples all point to certain characters and how society is treating them. Back then if no one would have accepted racism, our world might be different from what it is right
