Only a few people believed Tom was an innocent man, and one of those people included his lawyer Atticus Finch. Tom had many of people threaten him while he was locked away in Maycomb County Jail. This takes place in chapter fifteen. In groups, men began to get out there car and ask Atticus if Tom was present in the jailhouse. One of the men included Mr. Cunningham, Walter Cunningham’s father. Scout could not believe that he was involved in this rally because he was so nice. In this scene the readers can tell that Tom Robinson is a hated man, and wanted by plenty of people. In Native Son, Bigger Thomas was not a suspect in the murder of Mary Dalton. When he blamed Jan, the authorities believed him because he was able to manipulate them. Bigger was able to blame Jan because Jan was a communist, and communist were not in favor during this time period as well. The Dalton’s believed Bigger and the police officers believed Bigger. His story of events gave the cops a believable story to what really took place the night of Mary Dalton’s murder. Bigger was belittled as well because he acted quite innocent and shy. Bigger was as troublemaker for petty crimes, and his intelligence was not seen to be very high due to him not completing school. Both men did jobs for a Caucasian family. Tom Robinson did minor jobs that include cutting up wood, and moving heavy items. Bigger Thomas was given the job of being the families’ chauffeur. His first job was to take Miss Dalton to class the night he was hired. Bigger Thomas job however, included pay and a place to stay; Tom Robinson contributions to the Ewell family did not receive him any benefits, it was from the kindness of his heart.
