Caitlyn Davidson reporter of Barnaby Daily Times March 8th 1960 On Tuesday March 4th, 1960 innocent black man, Tom Robinson, was found guilty in the trial against Mayella Ewell, sent to prison and shot dead for attempted escape from Maycomb County. Tom Robinson, Bob and Mayella Ewell tell their story of the conviction. The Ewell’s story was completely different toward Robinson’s and against popular beliefs of Maycomb citizens thoughts and views Tom Robinson was found guilty for rape and physical assault. Robinson was then sent to prison where he was caught running “like a Madman” trying to escape and shot to death. After this Mayella had injuries to her right side, but was not possible as Tom’s left arm is disabled from getting it caught in a cotton gin. Many views of this case believe it was Bob who assaulted his daughter. Tom Robinson’s lawyer, Atticus Finch said "I don't know, but they did it. They've done it before and they did it tonight and they'll do it again and when they do it-seems that only children weep," (Page 285). Scout Finch commented on Tom Robinson's death saying, "In the secret courts of men's hearts Atticus had no case. Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed," (Page 232). The innocent mockingbird was found guilty for the case against Mayella Ewell and shot to death in prison trying to escape. To all Maycomb citizens following this case remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.
