In the beginning of the story, it is evident that Sylvia has an attitude problem. This is shown when Sylvia says, back in the days when everyone was old and stupid …show more content…
Through this experience though Miss Moore has never confronted Sylvia and seems to just let her do what Sylvia thinks she needs to do. One could maybe connect that Miss Moore went through the same thing growing up. This could be why Miss Moore is out helping these kids to show them that with hard work all of this could be possible. All of the children seem to be learning and starting to like Miss Moore this really makes Sylvia put her guard down and she even get mad at her friend Sugar for answering a question that Miss Moore had asked the group. This is where Sugar finally pushes past her boundaries and even though her friend Sylvia is stepping on her to shut her mouth she still decided on her own that she can do what she wants and that she does not need to always do what Sylvia does.
At the end of the story, it seems that everyone learned something but Sylvia did not. But in all honesty, she seems to have things about being scared that someone is going to be better than her and that is why she wants to hold Sugar back from doing better things. Sylvia states that no one will ever beat her(Bambara #). This showing that Miss Moore takes from this because she knows that Miss Moore has a higher education and it is like Sylvia feels that she has to prove something. It seems that Sylvia and Sugars friendship is only the way it is because Sugar seems to just be in Sylvia
