One of the events that causes Tony to lose his faith, is when he meets the Golden Carp. When Samuel first introduces the Golden Carp to Tony, he instantly becomes interested in the story. Tony thinks to himself, “Was my mother praying to the wrong God?”(81)He continuously thinks over the possibility of there being a new god, and if they are worshiping the right god. Once Tony actually meets the Golden Carp, he is astonished by its size and beauty. He truly believes that he is in the presence of a god. Tony shares the feeling of meeting the Golden Carp, and compares it to the Virgin and God. Antonio has enthusiastically been waiting to do his first communion. He believes that once he does it he will gain God’s knowledge, and get all of his questions answered. Tony asked his mother about his communion saying, “Then I will gain the knowledge of God?”(179) and she firmly agreed. After completing his first communion and receiving the eucharist, he is disappointed when nothing changes in him. Tony expected a grand feeling almost instantly, however everything remained the same. This causes him to question his faith, because he felt more joy when meeting the Golden Carp.
