October 24, 2014 On Tuesday in class, we watched a video titled, Too Young To Wed. In this video, two western reporters/journalists lively reported about their experiences in both Afghanistan and India. The first report journalists gave a little on the issue of young girls being married off in Afghanistan. The second journalist discussed the same issue, only her experience was centered in India. The issue these two women elaborated on are seldom discussed in our westernized culture because it is not an issue that is very prevalent. Some families have good intentions when marrying their daughters off because they know that if their daughters lose their virginity prior to marriage then they are branded as outcasts, but others only do it for personal gain. They do it to settle debts, gain alliances, untie two families, or for profit of money or goods. I, myself, couldn’t imagine raising a child and offering them over to another individual in a union to which my child does not understand. The first problem being that their bodies are not fully developed to carry on a healthy pregnancy, so this puts them and the unborn child at very high risks for complications and death. Going back to the possible abusive relationship these girls are placed in, one of journalist made reference to 15 year old Jamila who was stabbed by her husband for trying to visit her mother without his permission.
