Every year on December 7th Nicaraguans prepare themselves for the honoring of the Immaculate Conception. On this day they pray songs to the Virgin Marry and her perfect conception. Throughout the city many fireworks can be heard and people can find treats offered at any household. These treated might include rosquillas, leche de burra, nacatamal, oranges, lemons, and chopped cane. During this night of celebration children keep their treats in bags just like America's Halloween and are even permitted to through water balloons at each other. In December houses can be seen covered in elegant decorations. These decorations are orange balls filled with spicy cloves tied by a green lace above doors. These are called Muérdago and are used like mistletoe. Houses are also decorated with read crepe paper. Women get together and cut out guirnaldas simulating poinsettia which Nicaragua calls Flor del Pastor. The ae traditionally kept in the corner of the house to remind everyone that Jesus is at the center of celebration. In order to convey a spirit of Christmas, churches play carols loudly on speakers at 4:00
