Extreme conditions cause extreme reactions. For example, almost dying due to a bear attack. Imagine being banished to an island for an entire year, all alone, you’d think this is a harsh punishment until you find out that Cole Mathews received this punishment after beating up an innocent peer and smashing his head against the concrete. These events all happen in a book that my class read titled “Touching Spirit Bear.” The book “Touching Spirit Bear” is a fictional book that explains how life is a circle and teaches memorable lessons like the world changing is inevitable. I really enjoyed this book for many reasons, such as the intensity of the challenges Cole must overcome, the lessons he learns, and how much he changes.

There were more extreme changes as well, such as becoming invisible. Cole did this by letting all of his thoughts go and being part of the environment. By doing this, he got to see a beaver and even the Spirit Bear again. After seeing an animal, Cole would learn from its way of life, dance like the animal around a fire, and even carve it into a totem pole. All of these little things surely added up because one day Peter tried to commit suicide and Cole wanted to help him get better. He asked for Peter to be brought to the island and when he was, Cole would have been the nicest he's ever been. He started by welcoming Peter to the island and teaching him all the things he’d learned. Peter didn’t like Cole at all when he first got there, and didn’t for a while. Cole brought Peter up to soak with him every day, but Garvey had to come as well. After a month, Peter wanted to go without Garvey, just him and Cole. When they got up there, Peter started showing signs of aggression towards Cole and eventually started fighting him. Cole did not fight back though, he stayed strong and tried to help Peter through it. Peter admitted that he was just afraid of what Cole did to him, but now, Cole helped him to be happy again. This truly shows how much Cole has
