The fantasy story “Tough Alice” by Jane Yolen. Down a rabbit hole in wonderland-- where you think everything is wonderful. Alice a not much wanted girl gets stuck, not knowing what the other animals do. Alice is now on an adventure to find someone who can fight for her when the jabberwock finally finds her. One lesson in this story is selfishness makes people more dependent on others.
At the beginning of the story Alice’s inner thinking was more based on herself. The first page of Tough Alice, the pig and Alice were falling down the hole. “Alice being quite hungry, she reached out for it. “She had thought they might wave back, after all those times she poured for them and brought them cakes from the Duchess's pantry!” Because she brought them food and waved back she thought they would wave back. Therefor, the other animals did not like Alice back. Another reason why the sentenced shows Alice is not the only selfish person in Wonderland is because if the other animals were in the situation and scared they would search for people to help her. Alice thought that people would help her if she did good to them. So she did and they still did not help her because she need to figure it out herself.
By the end of the story Alice see’s how her selfishness is affecting others around her, so she is put up to the test of fighting the jabberwocky. “And you are your own future, added the White Queen.” This is an important piece of evidence that shows Alice had to be on her own. That is how everyone else in wonderland defeated the Jabberwock.
In conclusion to Tough Alice the story shows how Alice is selfish and very dependent. Throughout the story Alice continues to ask for help. At the end the author really showed her inner strength. At the very end she was scared of defeating the Jabberwocky by herself. With the help of the other animals saying they won't help her she was able to find the courage to defeat the Jabberwock
