The Haitian Revolution helped liberate Haiti formerly known as Saint-Domingue from not only slavery but the harsh reality of French colonization. Many characters had substantial roles to play in this epic war for freedom. Toussaint L’Ouverture was the most important of his time who was a literate, strong minded, colored male who had been set free. L’Ouverture fought hard to get his neglected citizens the freedom and respect they deserved, little did he know it would only cause more difficulties in the United States. Good intentions of Toussaint L’Ouverture backfired when placed in the hands of an unjust government with opposing views on how society should be valued.
