Transformation In Oate's 'House Taken Over'

This past summer, my friends and I were home alone for the whole night at my house. We invited a couple of friends over to hangout with us for awhile. When our friends arrived at my house, we were all just relaxing in my living room, watching scary movies. I had gotten up to check and see if my back door was locked,but as I turned the handle, the door had opened. I shut the door and right when I closed it, my front door slowly opened. My friends were so scared, that everyone had left. My friends and I were expecting to have a relaxing night while watching movies, but it somehow transformed into a night of everyone being scared and leaving. Transformation obviously create fear. This is effective because it shows that even on the most relaxing day, something can turn it all around and make it the most frightening day ever. For instance “I’ll always have a clear memory of it because it happened so simply and without fuss” (39, line 6 and 7). This proves that a big incident can happen out of nowhere. Therefore, transformation was effective because a scary incident can happen whenever you are least expecting it or without even a warning. Transformation causes fear because it will turn a comforting day into a spine-chilling day. Joyce Carol Oates’ “Where is Here’s?” transformation frightens readers by changing a quiet afternoon into a suspicious day for the family in the story. Arthur Tress’ “Dream Collector” scares readers by using pictures to show how nightmares can seem so realistic. Julio Cortazar’s “House Taken Over” scares the readers by describing how a regular day can be turned into a day of horror.
