I have a much clearer understanding of Mezirow’s transformative learning theory. In his article on, FOSTERING CRITICAL REFLECTION IN ADULTHOOD A Guide to Transformative and Emancipatory Learning Critical Reflection 1 –This was one of my outside readings from ALD 605 Psychology of the Adult Learner. ‘How Critical Reflection triggers Transformative Learning ‘everything fell into place. Too eloquent to paraphrase: According to Mezirow, (1990),
“To make ‘meaning’ means to make sense of an experience, we make an interpretation of it. When we subsequently use this interpretation to guide decision-making or action, then making ‘meaning’ becomes ‘learning’. (p. 1). Mona Smith (classmate in ALD 689 Portfolio) was instrumental in a great deal of my learning this semester. We were in the midst of a discussion for class when we both realized that we were saying the same thing, however, expressed differently: I was trying to be inspirational and she was trying to express how in synch we were: “Hey Mona, you have every reason to be proud!
