When the movie opens, Ruth is Roy and has been happily married to Irma for twenty-five years. Ruth has two children, a home, a decent job and a close group of friends. Shortly after their anniversary, Ruth discloses to Irma (and their pastor), that she has always known she was born in the wrong body and is actually a woman. Ruth explains to a stunned Irma that she wants to transition and have sexual reassignment surgery to live as a woman. Irma disgusted and in disbelief kicks Ruth out of their house and keeps their daughter and son from him. Equally as disturbing was his interrogation by the local sheriff when, at Lana’s urging, he reports the beating and rape.
