A Look at Transgender Integration in The Army

Abstract
There are many cases of transgender women serving in our military and transitioning after they get out. Christine Jorgensen, born George William Jorgensen Jr., was one such case (Morgan, 2014). Christine served in World War II and in 1951 underwent her gender reassignment surgery in Copenhagen, Denmark. Another case Albert D. J. Cashier, born Jennie Irene Hodgers as a Union Soldier during the civil war and remained in his gender of choice for the rest of his life. (Blanton/Cook, 2002)
I currently serve as Platoon sergeant for the evacuation platoon in a BSB in Ft. Campbell KY., and our company has a male soldier in the middle of transitioning to female. She has been taking hormones and receiving counseling for her reassignment. Her transition is in a sticky place as she is still a male in DEERS so must maintain the male standards as far as grooming, uniform wear and appearance, APFT, and height/weight. However, in the civilian world she has had her status legally changed to female and her name changed as well. In addition to this, the hormones have really changed her body

Transgender service members must serve as their assigned gender marker in DEERS. (Army Directive 2016-30). If a male soldier is in transition to female then he still must maintain male grooming standards, wear and appearance of Military uniform, height weight, APFT, and accept male billeting and shower/latrine facilities. Commanders can authorize exception to policies (ETP) for APFT dates to be rescheduled, special billeting and facility consideration, and change the date of the expected reassignment in DEERS in order to maintain a positive command climate and fair transition of the Transgender
