Altered in consciousness: Coma, a person who's unconscious and unaware of anything and unable to response to any stimuli and that results from damage to all parts of the brain. Vegetative state, even though the person is unaware of his/her surroundings they may response to reflexes or make certain sounds or open their eyes and that results from damage to all parts of the brain. Minimally conscious state, a condition when there is an evidence of self-awareness or awareness of one's environment and it's a clue to greater recovery. Locked-in syndrome, it's when the person is aware and awake but cannot move or speak and only communicate by their eyes or blinking and results from limited damaged to the lower brain and brain stream.
