Haiti Election Protests

Many significant events has happened to Haiti in the recent years; including the earthquake and multiple protests over different conflicts, all receiving extensive global attention. What is actually happening in Haiti currently?

The elections in Haiti has been a crucial issue ever since 1995, triggering violent protests and demanding action from the government. Violent protests have erupted again in Haiti after the electoral council announced the official results of the first round of presidential election in October. During past crisis, such as the oil crisis and earthquake in 2010, the government were incompetent in aiding the citizens, which caused the unrest of citizens, who expected more assistance in these matters. The government of Haiti is corrupt and came in almost no support for its people, resulting in the president and vice president being asked to step down, so a better fit leader could be put in place for the country (Anti-government Protests Violence, 2013). The elections for a new president has been organised, and accused of fraud by the government. This could have been a result of their incompetence, affecting the citizen’s view on the government. Another cause of these conflicts is the economical unrest. In 2014, the Haitian population has demanded dropping of oil prices as the prices of oil seemed to rise with dramatic inclines. Under the pressure from its citizens, the government only allowed a slight decline for oil in the country (Anti-government Protests Violence, 2013). This results in anger building up amongst the citizens, unsatisfied with their government decisions, ultimately producing violent protests, with catastrophic endings. The anger amongst the citizens and disagreement with the government has caused over thousands of people to violently protest, including by burning tires and throwing rocks at the riot police in anti-government demonstrations, which ultimately caused the injuries of two police officers. The police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters in which one person was killed when the two groups clashed (Haiti’s Government Heating Up, 2015). This social effects, greatly affecting the citizens of the country was all caused by complaints on political and economical factors. Of course, these protests has also resulted in great police unrest, leaving the country with an uncertain political future as well as the pressure from The UN and US. The government has currently failed their citizens as well as disowned their trust, and also ineffective in dealing with the issues. In the process of these conflicts, multiple human rights were definitely violated. Including freedom of inhumane treatment, such as when the police force fired tear gas at its citizens. However, these protest which took place were not peaceful at first, which eliminates many human rights which they could take to their arguments if the demonstrators protest with
