Truck Town Thunder Case Study

In the beginning, 21 years ago, Truck Town Thunder, or T3, was a small robotics team working out of a General Motors plant in Pontiac, Michigan, T3 had less than 15 students then. Today, T3 flourishes from Brandon High School’s woodshop. Even though, at the end of last season we lost half our space, our head mentor, and funding from the school district, we still continue to spread the word of FIRST with every pep assembly, town hall presentation, board meeting, parade, partnership drive, education exploration night, street fair, and so much more. This outreach creates a FIRST-centered community environment that engages new and old students students alike. As T3 spreads throughout the ever-expanding community, the students and their mentality seep into neighboring towns and communities. T3’s online presence is constantly growing by posting to social media sites, such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Because of the extensive outreach, knowledge of T3’s mechanical prowess reached the superintendent. When a new business needed assistance designing blueprints, T3 was asked to assist. This allowed T3 to have a further positive effect on our community. FIRST is a family of students with similar interests, experiences, brought together to gain field experience and an opportunity no other program, sport, or club can offer an individual. Truck Town Thunder has effectively adopted the proper ideals, values, and missions of FIRST, and has effectively implemented them into our everyday life, into every student mentor, every youth team, and every interaction we have. Truck Town is a role model for other FIRST teams. We don’t have large amounts of money, nor do we have a large number of people. However, what we do have is a team who has effectively grasped the ideals of FIRST, and exemplifies them everywhere and
