What is the meaning of true grit? It means to have a never-ending courage, grit, or to show strength in any situation you are thrown into. That’s exactly what the main character, Mattie Ross, of the movie True Grit has. This movie is about a fourteen years old girl who is determined to avenge her father’s murderer. Even though Mattie wants justice for her father she wants to get it through revenge by killing the man who killed her father. You can also redeem revenge through doing the right thing or your specific responsibility. No matter what the inspiration is for wanting revenge and how it is actually done, you are shown that there is a value for those want to seek revenge.

He is very optimistic about helping Mattie at first because he only sees her as a little girl that needs to be home with her mom not tracking down some random killer. The only reason he does help her because she gives him money to do so. I think since he has killed men before him doing this job is not brave at all just an everyday thing for him. The bravest thing he did do is let Mattie get close to him to where she becomes sort of a daughter figure to him. He opening his emotions to her is the bravest thing he did throughout the movie. Rooster knows that people are better off without the bad guys, so he is willing to take the money that he was offered to get rid of Chaney for Mattie. Rooster is actually very stubborn and set in his way of doing things his way and when he wants to do them. Rooster lived a very rough and dangerous life, lost an eye, started drinking, he lost his career, was the major result he hurt for doing what he thought was the right thing to do. In the 1969 original Cogburn was clearly the center of attention, with the plot of the story it does not really matter who has the grit. Grit means courage and resolve; strength of character, but also to clench (the teeth), especially in order to keep one's resolve when faced with an unpleasant or painful duty. Both Mattie and Rooster demonstrated the definition of grit in both version of the story.
