In the bloody brawl, arrogance caused Tybalt to fight Mercutio and for Tybalt to fight Romeo. In Act 3 Scene 1, Tybalt taunted Mercutio until he accepted the challenge to fight. He says, “I am for you.” Romeo replies for Mercutio and says, “Gentle Mercutio, put thy rapier up” (lines 49,50). This shows Tybalt’s arrogance. He thought he was head and shoulders above everyone which led to his rash decision to fight Mercutio. After the clash with Tybalt, Mercutio, who was Romeo’s friend, had honor for being his friend. Tybalt insists on fighting Mercutio because he hangs out with Romeo. Mercutio doesn’t think they just “hang out.” He is under the impression that they are very good friends. Mercutio honors his friendship with Romeo by fighting Tybalt. When talking to Tybalt, Mercutio says, “Consort? What, dost thou make us minstrels of us, look to hear nothing but discords. Here’s my fiddlestick. Here’s that shall make you dance. Zounds, ‘Consort’” (3.1.20-23). After this event happens, Mercutio and Tybalt die and Romeo gets banished. Benvolio, after witnessing the event says, “Tybalt here slain, whom Romeo’s hand did slay...Piercing steel at bold Mercutio’s breast. Succeeding Juliet’s “death, love caused Romeo to go to Juliet’s tomb and plan to die with her. In act 5 scene 3 Romeo finds Juliet dead. He says, “Call this a lightning?-O my love, my wife! Death that hath sucked the honey of thy breath” (100-101). This quote shows the love of Juliet and her Romeo. He was devastated to see the love of his life dead. After Juliet made plans to fake her death, Friar Lawrence did not communicate well with Romeo. Friar Lawrence told Juliet that Romeo would be there when she woke up, but when she woke up he had passed on. Friar had a miscommunication with Romeo which caused him to join the heavens above. In act 5 scene 3 Juliet awakens to find Romeo dead. She asks Friar Lawrence, “O comfortable Friar! Where is my lord? I do remember well I should be, and there I am. Where is my Romeo?” (lines 160-162) This chain effect leads to Romeo and Juliet killing themselves, Paris dying, and Lady Montague dying from a broken heart. After Juliet finds Romeo dead she says, “What’s here?...Poison, I see, hath been his timeless end...There rust and let me die” (5.3.174,184).
