Intertwined throughout the story’s twists and turns, the thematic statement: you never know what’s going to happen, plays out time and time again. Not only were readers unsure where the book would take them because of its storyline but also because this was one of the first true crime books to be written. This novel was written before crime novels were fiction and now stories such as this impact many people in their everyday lives. He thought of it as a puzzle and something to solve. Ironically, because of one family's execution agent, Dewey was neglecting his family. He had begun to become obsessed with touring the Clutter home. Little did he know a major clue was about to drop. Ironically, Wells Dicks former cellmate, the man who told him about the Clutters, is about to tell a trusted church official who he thinks committed the crime. All the foreshadowing was beginning to connect, as the agents had figured out who their two main suspects were. The suspects were apprehended in Las Vegas and transported back to Kansas by car. On this car ride, Dick thinks Perry flipped on him, thus making him recount the full story of the murders to investigators. He flashes back to that night and gives a vivid account. On their arrival, there was a large crowd waiting for the murders. Dick and Perry were placed on death row where they were put to death by hanging. Ironically, the men were put to death for murder.
