Tuba Concert Review

On October 27th, I got the opportunity to watch and perform at Octubafest. Octubafest is a recital involving the Tuba and Euphonium Studio. They play music that is themed off of October Fest. This concert was filled with different moments that related to one common theme. The first thing I observed at Octubafest was the fact tuba had more melodies than you would commonly hear in Wind Ensemble or Concert Band. Tuba is typically known as the foundation of the band. Normally, most directors want to feel the tuba presents more than hear it, so at the recital, it was a nice touch to be able to enjoy the tuba being the melody. If you saw a regular jazz band set up, euphoniums are typically not in the ensemble. I brought up the point of jazz band because in jazz band you have to do some improv. Since euphoniums are not usually found in jazz band, players do not get a chance to refine their improv skills. This recital utilized this skill a lot between the two pieces. Some of the students were able to improve when they normally do not get the chance to. This was a great opportunity because that gave them the chance to do something outside of what they are accustom to in an ensemble. This is a great learning skill for euphonium players. That night I was able to perform in Octubafest. This was a new experience for me because I only play baritone in marching band. The first big different is the horn itself. In high school marching band, I played a marching baritone while in the recital I played a concert euphonium. The difference was huge for the simple fact that the sound production came from a different end. The marching baritone’s sound comes out in front of you, and the euphonium’s sound goes up and beside you. Another different is the position you hold the two horns.
