Turning Points In Joseph Cornell's The Kite Runner

For my project I did a Joseph Cornell styled box which is sectioned off into parts and uses some found objects to create the final piece. I decided to put events in these sections that stood out and caused turning points in the book. I chose to do recreate the alley scene, since it was one of the most important scenes. I chose to paint Wali and Kamal hidden in the shadows of the alley, and to have Assef and Hassan visible, since they were the center of attention during this scene. Off to the side, I have Amir watching them from behind the building. The next event I chose to do was when Amir brought the blue kite to Baba. The blood on the wall represents the struggle and death because of the Taliban in the novel. I felt as though this was an important scene to do because of the fact that they were the reason for Hassan’s death and many other Hazaras. Another scene I decided to recreate was the scene where Amir took his watch and money to put under Hassan’s mattress. I feel as though this was an important scene in the novel because Amir was trying to frame Hassan simply because he couldn’t bare to be around him after he had seen the situation in the alley. This then lead Hassan, who played a fairly large part in the novel, and his “father” to move and this was the last time Hassan and Amir were together. In addition, I chose to do the scene where Assef and Amir were fighting as adults with Sohrab in the room. This was an important scene because it offered Amir a way to finally heal the interior wounds he had. Lastly, I chose to do the scene where Amir and Sohrab were flying the kite together at the end of the novel. It’s important because it acts as a closing and shows that some healing has taken place.
