During World War II, a group of African Americans known as the Tuskegee Airmen served as pilots, navigators, and instructors. They were regarded as courageous warriors who put their lives in danger to provide ground attack and bomber escort skills. However, because of racial prejudice that persisted in the service, their bravery, abilities, and professionalism were not acknowledged. Deeply rooted racial stereotypes and discriminatory ideas that were pervasive in society served as the general rationale for black men's exclusion from and limited participation in the military.
