I will use this historical investigation to try and answer to the best of my ability the question: How Significantly Did The Tuskegee Syphilis experiment on African Americans Contribute to Their Distrust of Medicine and the Medical Community Today? I will analyze the significance of the Tuskegee Syphilis experiment and how important of a role it played in the distrust of African Americans of medicine and the medical community today.

The first source that I will analyze is ”Under the Shadow of Tuskegee: African Americans and Health Care” written by Vanessa Northington Gamble. This article was written in November of 1997 and its purpose was to explain the history revolving around the Tuskegee Syphilis study and its long lasting effects. . Not only does this article describe the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment and its aftermath, but it also discusses other factors that may also be conducive to African Americans and their distrust in health care. The value of this document is that it expresses the opinion of how the study has changed the course of medical community significantly and explains how the study is continuously casting its shadow over the black community today. She has become an important and eminent spokesperson for equal access to standard health care for all Americans. A limitation to this source is that Gamble also served as chair of Legacy Committee of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study; this affiliation produces bias throughout the article. She was also raised in impoverished conditions during the same time period that the study was being conducted. The study was aimed towards black impoverished males and so since she was raised in low socio-economic status, which puts her almost identically in the same community as the subjects of the study, also providing us with
