We all have different identities because we all go through different things that shape who we are. Depending on how you grew up, who you hang out with, and even how people treat you can determine how you treat others and what attitude you have. Two factors that shape Melinda’s life are her friends and family. First and foremost, Melinda’s friends shape her identity because every time she trusts one of them or makes a new friend, they bail on her in a heartbeat. Heather, her only friend at the time came to Melinda and said “Look you can't eat lunch with me anymore”(Anderson 107).
