Two Major Political Parties

The United States has two major political parties: Republican and Democrat. These parties play a great role in American society. They select the candidates they believe are appropriate for the office, support those candidates through media, and sometimes change policies or make some new policies. In addition, they help to tie people with the government and make more people to be involved in politics. Without political parties, the Unites States would not have a strong leadership as it has now. Usually people vote for the candidate who they trust. They make a big decision when voting to support who they want to be their leader in coming years because that leader can make many changes. Each state has a number of representatives, depending on the population, and two senators. Senators serve six years each term and one-third of them get reelected or replaced every two years. On the other hand, representatives serve only two years each term. Both representatives and senators have no limit on the number of terms they can serve. Once the party decides who is their presidential candidate against the candidate of the other party, it announces its candidate and supports him/her through media. Roskin (2014) says that members learn speaking in public and meetings from their parties (p. 174). As a competition, both of the parties spend millions of dollars through media and get advisors to advice candidates how to act in front of people and cameras. They try to do what makes people happy so they will have more supporters.
