Behind my grandmother’s house, there was a canal that ran all throughout the neighborhood. She had fenced off the backyard in case one of us kids went too far and “accidentally” fell into the canal. However, my grandmother also placed two parallel fences that ran perpendicular to the back of the house forming a “T” shape, which to this day I still do not understand why those two fences were there. As my cousins and I played hide-and-go-seek, we knew that if we were being chased by whoever was “it”, it was best to not run behind the house where the two parallel fences were, as it would slow us down and could potentially ruin our chances of getting away and being tagged. I got over the first fence perfectly but then, as I was attempting my dismount off the second fence, my body went nowhere. My basketball shorts had latched on to the little twisty things that extended from the fence. Suddenly, I heard my cousin turning the corner and I used all my force to unlatch myself but that only worsened the situation. Next thing you know, I was hanging upside down helpless. My cousin finally caught up to me and I begged for help, but her interpretation of help was to gather all my family from inside the house to expose me. Most kids would have probably cried, but I laughed. I laughed at my family’s amusement to my embarrassment. I laughed because although it was embarrassing, how could someone not laugh at the fact that a 6 year old girl got stuck on to a fence while trying to win a game of hide-and-go-seek. I saw life upside down, literally. Whenever I faced an uncomfortable situation I looked “on the bright side” and never allowed it to takeover
