They have over 500 animals of almost 150 species, including many vulnerable species. Celebrated as an expert primate zoo, which is the only zoo in UK to display all four types of great apes: gorilla, chimpanzee, orang-utan and bonobo, the latter being the only bonobos in the country. Twycross zoo has the largest collection of monkeys and apes in the western world.
“Twycross zoo was constituted in 1963 by Molly Badham and Nathalie Evans. They set to look for an appropriate site to grow their zoological collection, having outgrown their first site at Hints, Staffordshire where they had set up Hints Zoological Gardens in 1954. The zoo was first based at the old rectory in the village of Norton Juxta Twycross. Having long since discontinued operative as a rectory, the house became a private residence known as Norton Grange. Badham and Evans converted the 12 acres of gardens, structures, stables and farm buildings into a zoo.”
Even though having a great day out at Twycross Zoo, it’s also a charity supporting animal conservation and environmental education hub. As a charity all the funds raised at the zoo are invested straight back into their mission of protecting vulnerable species and communicating the conservation
