UNB Security is tasked with the safety and protection of students at the University of New Brunswick. Included in the security team’s responsibilities is to respond to incidents on campus, relating to harassment, discrimination, assault, sexual assault, and improper conduct. This team’s role is intervention and prevention of incidents, as well as investigation and prosecuting those who commit violations to UNB’s rules and policies. The current rules and standards for dealing with issues brought before security is deeply flawed and requires intensive review and amendments. Serious change needs to take place to honestly make the claim that UNB and UNB Security are making their best effort to protect students, that they are creating a safe environment, and that they run on a system of accountability that has effective discipline. According to the 2017 Annual UNB Report, 22 incidents were reported to security about harassment, discrimination, assault, and sexual assault. Over half of these remain unresolved. The most glaring of flaws with this system can be highlighted by two sexual assault cases that took place in 2016, one involving over 6 people being assaulted by 1 person, and both cases remaining on the table for over a year before a Tribunal took place. The causes of the gross negligence of security and mentioned administrative staff may be attributed to the lack of training, the ineffective policies, and lack of professionalism. Although the issue of policy is being addressed with a re-write of the sexual assault policy, this policy should still have been a point of common knowledge among necessary staff members. Security and the sexual assault advocate have both acknowledged the glaring faults in the system, its failures, and have discussed that the lack of providing proper forms and information for students who have made complaints, and to those accused.
