I believe I am a strong candidate for the USM Honors Abroad Program for multiple reasons. First, I am very hardworking. I played three sports in high school, maintained a part time job, volunteered at local events, and received high honor roll. I continued to work hard my first semester of college, receiving deans list and playing soccer at USM. I am very curious and interested in this three week program- exploring the different cultures and environments of Portland, Maine and Iceland. I’m a hands on type of learner so this kind of class will be very fitting for me. I am outgoing and love being outdoors. My two favorite activities are located outside- hiking and snowboarding. I’m very social, I like meeting new people. This program provides me with the opportunity to interact with students that I may not know very well. They strongly believe in equality of every single citizen. Iceland is considered to be ahead of countries regarding equal rights. The most practiced religion in both areas is Catholicism. Although, majority of Iceland citizens do not attend church regularly. Maine citizens practice their religion more frequently, most go every Sunday morning. Working and education is very important to citizens of Iceland. The average student starts school at age two and end at sixteen, when they then choose whether to pursue a college degree. Portland offers a similar schooling program; preschool offered to four-five year olds and students complete high school at age eighteen. The amount of years are the same, the ages are different. Children are in school for roughly nine months of the year, just like Portland. Although there are many similarities, a major difference between the two places is the two different languages that are spoken. Iceland speaks Icelandic whereas Maine speaks English.
