Louis, Missouri. He served as quartermaster during the Mexican-American War. He married Julia Dent in 1848, and together they had 4 children. During this period of six years he was stationed all over the country. While he was stationed in California, he began to miss him wife and kids. He got involved in numerous business ventures in trying to get his family closer to him. After all the failures, he began to drink and formed a reputation that would follow him throughout his military career. On July 31st, 1854, he resigned from the Army because of accusations of heavy drinking and warnings of disciplinary action. In 1868 he was elected the 18th President of the United States. When he entered office, he was politically inexperienced and was the youngest president of the time. One of the things eh accomplished while in office was pushing through the ratification of the 15th Amendment and he also established the National Park Service. He served two terms, but didn’t get a chance to serve a third,
After he left the white house, he became a partner in a financial firm. The firm went bankrupt and so did he. In 1884 he was diagnose with throat cancer. Grant began to sell magazine articles about his life, that Mark Twain eventually published selling 300,000 copies and earning the Grant family roughly $450,000. Ulysses S. Grant died on July 23, 1885 in Mount McGregor, New York and he is buried in New York City.
I believe Ulysses S. Grant was a very successful man. Not every thing he did was successful, but many things were. If he hadn’t accomplished what he did in the Civil War, it might have ended differently. Many others thought he was successful or at least respected him, or else he wouldn’t have been elected president of the U.S. He was a very important person in history that is over looked for what he has
