The UN was officially formed in 1945 when the charter of the United Nations was drafted at the San Fransisco conference in California, where the term ‘United Nations’ was first coined by Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. The conference was attended to by 50 nations and several non-government organisation (NGO). The role of the UN peace keepers varies depending on the situation. Since 1948 the peacekeepers have been deployed in a number of countries to help with elections, maintain peace or to enforce/ continue ceasefires such as the United Nations Advance Mission in Cambodia between October 1991 and March 1992 which was established to maintain the Cambodian ceasefire and to provide mine-awareness training to citizens. The peace keepers are under strict ruling*? that they cannot use violence at any point, unless in self defence and are required to use minimum force to result desired effect. Every decision made by the UN peace keepers has to consider public perceptions and the humanitarian impact.
The conflict began in 2011 in city of Deraa where citizens gathered in protests of the arrest and apparent torture of a group of teenagers.
