The article “Young Adults With Autism More Likely to be Unemployed, Isolated” talks about how young people with autism face a much harder transitional period from teenage years to adulthood. The article stated that young adults with autism have lower employment rates and higher isolation rates than people with other disabilities. Anticipatory socialization is defined as the teaching and learning of what will be expected of one in the future (Ritzer 2015). I chose this sociological concept for my article because I believe young adults with autism are receiving a lack of anticipatory socialization. Anticipatory socialization plays a huge role in preparing children for school, the work world, and life as an adult (Ritzer 2015). If young adults with autism were receiving proper teaching and support, they would be educated on how to work with their disability. Also the article states that even though people with autism have a difficult time relating to other people, the majority of people on the spectrum do show some amount of social desire (Singh 2015). Knowing that people with autism do have a social appetite is helpful, now there just needs to be more services supporting the education and planning of ones’ future so that person can best apply themselves. By not providing these children with proper anticipatory socialization, we are setting them up for failure. We need to provide people with autism the knowledge and resources to succeed or we will never see a change in these
