Unforgotten Interview Story
Introduction:
For many generations, valuing culture is very important for the country of Somalia. In each family, girls and boys followed the rules of their elders and had a lot of respect for them. However women had less freedom and less economic opportunity and their only choices were the ones that their family leaders or elders made for them. But now, everything has changed, and women now have their own respect among the family. My interviewee, in particular, is one who lived in that society or generation of limited freedom, and unfortunately, fell in love with her husband. Because of her love, the culture biases in Somalia begin to challenge her.
Background of Interviewee: On May 24, 2016, I interviewed Mrs. Canab Ali on the phone; though, she can't speak English. Canab originally from Somalia. She is a 60 year-old woman who is living with her husband as well as with her grandchildren. She used to live in America but now she lives in Somalia. In addition, she wishes to be known for being a supportive spirit in a person's success which was her dream. She wants people to remember that she was a kind and extroverted person when she was gone. According to her, “ I always wondered whether my family would remember me while I was gone.” One aspect of aging that she looked forward to is loving her children and watching them accomplish their goals. To her, watching them grow up made her happy every day. One aspect of aging she dread is watching her friends dying alone one by one; for instance, last year, her friend Aisha died alone without family member around especially her children. She fears to be dying alone and leave her family
