Understand why communication is important in the work setting
1.1 Identify different reasons why people communicate
I am of a view that open communication and a positive attitude can support the maintenance of relationships. I feel it is therefore important to assess your own attitudes and values to ensure this doesn’t impact on others, hence have a willingness to challenge any arising issues in a professional manner. Conflict may arise in a working relationship. It would be important to be sensitive and allow feelings to be aired, but actively seek where apt to resolve a situation instead of dwelling on the issue.
To express needs; to share ideas and information; to reassure; to express feelings; to build relationships; socialise; to ask questions; to share experiences
People communicate in order to establish and maintain relationships with others, to give and receive information and instructions, to understand and be understood, to share opinions, knowledge, feelings, emotions, to give encouragement and show others they are valued. Communication is an essential tool a carer can use to meet the needs of children. It is a basic requirement of my job role to communicate with individuals and their families, other members of staff on a daily basis. Communicating with other staff members ensures effective team working and continuity of care. It also ensures any health and safety issues are recognised and reported. All carers attend hand over at the beginning of each shift and also complete communication books after attending an individual, thereby keeping other staff informed and aware of current situations within the workplace.
Individuals communicate with carers to express their needs and preferences and to ensure they are met. As a carer I would discuss the options and choices available to the individual to allow them an informed choice regards their care. People communicate to explain needs, feelings, sharing information and etc. Communication is a part of relationships and relationships are a part of communication. It is difficult to deal with one without the other because they are too closely. I’m working in care and that means I’m working with other human beings…communication is a basic requirement in my job. All communications are confidential and I also know they are necessary to ensure health and safety issues
1.2 Explain how effective communication affects all aspects of own work
Within the care setting I communicate using: Communication books, Handover with Colleagues, staff message book, Staff meetings, meetings with my Line Manager Etc.
Effective communication is important as it ensures that information is: clear, concise, accurate, non-judgmental, and informative. This reduces the possibility of mistakes being made, and ensuring appropriate care service delivery. It is important to work as a team with your colleagues, so that you all work to achieve the same outcomes and targets.
Communication is much more than talking and is about how people respond to each other in many different ways. Any relationship comes about throught communication. In order to be an effective carer I must to be a good communicator and I also know people communicate through: speaking, facial expression, body language, position, dress…gestures. As a carer I need to be very careful at any details when I
