Social Care or Children’s and Young
People’s Settings
1.0 Introduction
This unit is to provide knowledge and understanding in how varied individuals and values can be treated with equal opportunities and not being left out or isolated. Treating an individual equally does not intend to treat everybody the same. It mean individual should be valued and regardless their differences and working with people in the way that does not feel left them out. The unit is also providing an understanding in how an individual can be affected by being excluded or left out reasonably or unreasonably and positive way to reduce or finish discrimination. The provided knowledge is intending to be applied in our areas of responsibilities to promote and ensure diversity, equality and inclusion.
1.1 Understand the importance of diversity, equality and inclusion
Working in Health and Social Care settings and providing support to people , should be knowledgably enough to understand that uniqueness must be valued and recognised their differences if equality, diversity and inclusion was to be promoted.
1.1.0 Explain what is meant by Diversity, Equality and Inclusion
1.1.1 Diversity: this is the state or quality of being different. This means; the value and peculiarities, which different individual deliver to the community or society are precisely interprets of diversity. When turning to people each person is unique in different ways. Example of these may include:
Body morphology
Skin colour
Age (children, young or adults)
Gender (men, women, gay and lesbian)
Attributes (beliefs of religion, culture or politics)
Values (person-characters or behaviours)
Preferences
Health status
Talents and Intellectual ability
It definite that the world could be annoying if everybody was made the same in one of the above or all individuals made the same with all as mentioned. For example: same sex, talent, health status etc. however, there many and specific differences in human being and these are which have made everybody as an individual and unique from others. Working as a support worker in health and social care settings: I now understand the importance of recognising and valuing individuals and their difference and the contribution they make to the society.
1.1.2 Equality: this is the state of being equal. When comes to people equality is about offered equal opportunities, fair treatment and justness. When working in Health and Social Care settings: equality means giving equal opportunities or treatment. This is different from giving same opportunity or treatment. Regardless differences, individuals got access of same life opportunities rather than same life experience. This is what we should ensure to people we are supporting or look after. Some of equal opportunities are:
Shelter
Food
Education
Personal hygiene
Communicate needs
Relationship to others
Health and well-being
In health and social care settings; people we supporting, look after of serving they need a support to access life opportunities. From my work point of view; I am aware that individuals we are supporting most need an extra support/care regarding their situations of being physical or/and mental disabled, which caused by disease or accidents. I understand such state or situation may increase the likelihood of less opportunities and an individual own ability to maintain required standard of life. The sense of equality is vital and about giving and supporting people, ensure they are provided with suitable service whilst treated fairly.
1.1.3 Inclusion: is about accepting and recognising people disregarding of their differences. In previous paragraphs, already explained that when maintaining diversity and equality, then all differences have to be acknowledged and understood, which in turns does make sense of inclusion. However,
