Partners of the Americas, through a program funded by the United States Department of State, is looking for U.S. youth (15-17 years old) Kansas, Minnesota, Texas, Colorado, Utah, North Carolina, Indiana and the Washington, DC area (counties that border DC included) very interested in learning more about South America, practicing Spanish, becoming better leaders, and connecting with youth from different ethnic, religious and national groups.
Selected youth will travel to Washington, DC and Paraguay for four weeks from July 15th – August 14th, 2013. As a Youth Leader, you will have the opportunity to:
* Appreciate similarities and differences between the U.S. and Paraguay as well as South America in general; * Learn about Paraguay’s fascinating history, culture, politics, environment and language(s); * Develop the skills needed to be a positive leader in your community; * Explore societal challenges and create a service project for your community; * Connect to a network of volunteers including other youth throughout the hemisphere.
Applicants must meet the following requirements in order to participate:
1. Be between 15-17 years old at date of travel (July 15th) 2. Currently enrolled in a high school and have at least one semester after July 15th – August 14th 3. Good academic standing 4. Display leadership qualities and potential 5. Have volunteer experience and a real commitment to serving others 6. Be able to communicate effectively in Spanish 7. Be a U.S. Citizen (Permanent Residents cannot apply due to safety complications)
Applications of eligible candidates will be reviewed and finalists will be contacted by Partners staff for a phone interview. In addition to the above criteria, candidates will be judged on their dedication to service and community, ability to adapt to new situations and environments, and maturity and responsibility.
