In Cuba, children under the age of sixteen may not be tried in the same way as adults, which is the foremost step in creating an adequate justice system. Rather, our program implements Re-education Centers, which properly treat minors who have committed crimes. Cuban trials for minors provide legal support for the defendant, which is supplied by the state, and the fate of the child is decided by a panel of legal experts. The existence of these centers protects children from potential abuse by adult detainees, creating a safer and more positive environment in both major and minor detainment centers. Cuban detainment centers share a focus on the rehabilitation process in its detainees, both children and adults. Our centers feature programs that focus on the musical and visual arts to encourage growth and learning in the children. The facilities are well kept, clean, and orderly. Our Re-education Centers function as a proper detainment facility should. In addition, it is also important to note that Cuba does not try minors for every crime that an adult could be tried for, as these two justice systems should be kept separated in order to address the needs of both demographics properly.
