Facing life challenges can have a detrimental effect on a person’s well-being. Although we can not avoid life’s battles, we can learn to bounce back and grow while navigating adversity and preserving. The poem “Unlike Any,” by Oddisee, is about the alpine skier Lindsey Vonn and details her injuries from a major skiing accident where she broke numerous bones and tore multiple ligaments, only to come back from it and ski again. Oddisee is a rapper based out of Brooklyn, New York who was asked by Under Armour to create a poem to help highlight the exceptional athlete Lindsey Vonn is. The “screws” represent outside physical support needed to help heal the body. The “bones” portray the very core that holds people together. The “stitches” can mean sewing back together or healing. The “wounds I own” can be interpreted to show how this adversity is now part of her healing journey. The effect that these lines have on the poem is to create an image in the reader's head to understand how serious the injuries are that she had to overcome. This imagery paints a vibrant picture of pain, hurt, resilience and ownership of the challenge a person needs to overcome while showing the marks left behind from life's trials. “Unlike Any" by Oddisee and “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten both convey the message that if people run across challenges they have to have perseverance and resilience to overcome them. Two similarities between both the poem and the song were they both had something that they had to overcome and used imagery to share it.
