American Promise Analysis
In the movie American Promise Seun and Idris are two black kids going to a prestigious school and the struggles of doing good at school. They battled intersectionality in the movie by being black and going to a predominately white school. When they were younger they were both categorized as very smart and as they got older the teachers put a label on them. In one case in the movie the teachers wanted to give them a tutor program because of them being on financial aid. These two boys were the only ones getting the tutoring program. I feel that this is a racially bias thing because the teachers felt that both children would not commit to the school work and would eventually fail out. Idris parents didn’t let him fail out so he stayed at Dalton all four years of high school and ended up at a college his parents wouldn’t pick for him. Seun however left Dalton and went to a mostly black school where he wasn’t a minority anymore and could fit in. Idris i feel had the worst of time in school because he had adhd and his parents were over schooling him. One part in the movie Idris youth basketball team was making fun of him for talking white. I feel that the stereotype “talking white” is disrespectful to everyone because if talking like a white person proves you’re more educated than talking slang to people anyone can make a good impression. Seun had it rough when his mom had colon cancer and his brother died but that didn’t let him
