Kate Chopin uses situational irony, which means an event that occurs in a different way than what was really expected, or what should of happened and how it actually happened. In Desiree's baby irony is used at the end of the story when Armand sees that his son isn't white, blaming Desiree causing him to lose them both only to find the real truth. On page 3, Armand finally speaks and explains why he no longer loves Desiree nor his own son, Armand states, “that the child is not white; it means that you are not white,” (3). Instead of handling the situation professionally, Armand refers the color of his son as a disgrace to his name, “Moreover he no longer loved her, because of the unconscious injury she had brought upon his home and his name,”
